ITIS discussion sessions

Two discussion sessions will take place as part of ITIS. These are as follows.

Discussion session 1: Justifications and Collaborations

Part 1

Attendees will split into groups comprising those working in a similar sub-area in order to discuss reasons for researching their particular aspect of interactive stories. They will also discuss how their techniques could be applied to the creation of an interactive James Bond experience. This will clarify the exact focus of each research group and will highlight the advantages and shortcomings of existing research. James Bond storylines tend to be well-known and reasonably generic while still varying enough to maintain audience interest.

Part 2

All participants will regroup and present the results of the sub-area discussions to the other workshop attendees.

Part 3

Representatives from each research sub-area then join together in mixed discussion groups to discuss ways of combining these various methods. This will be done depending on how people think they will relate and which they think are most relevant. It should lead to a greater understanding of similar work and hopefully collaborations. They will also consider the creation of an interactive James Bond experience in a way that incorporates their various aspects of Interactive Story research.

Discussion session 2: The Ideal Interactive Story System

Part 1

Participants will be asked to consider what exactly is meant by "the ideal interactive story system". Each participant will discuss what they believe this to be and through this a picture of the ultimate will be formed.

Part 2

Interactive Story is in need of a common vocabulary. At present, each group defines and uses its own vocabulary, with little to no consistency between the separate groups. Although this is understandable given the groundbreaking nature of this research area, confusion and misunderstanding is a common result. To address the need for a unified vocabulary, participants of this session will discuss their views on what this vocabulary should be. By drawing participants from the many sub-areas of Interactive Story, we hope to effectively distribute this common vocabulary across the field and promote it as a new standard.

Part 3

Using the vocabulary that was agreed on in part 2, participants will be asked to consider the current state of interactive story research in relation to the morning's presentation sessions. They will then discuss how the ultimate aims identified in part 1 will be achieved from the current state. This will involve a consideration of major steps to cover and obstacles to overcome, and yield a greater understanding of what work should be done next.
